What’s one thing you’re learning right now — professionally or personally?
It is easy to say learning more about artificial intelligence is a professional interest; personally, I have always wanted to learn a musical instrument so I have taken up acoustic guitar.
In your view, what makes a truly effective board member?
I find that thoughtful contribution to board discussions is very effective way to engage with the board. Even when the topic may not be in your area of professional expertise, broad experience often makes a difference in outcomes.
Beach, mountains, city, or countryside — what’s your ideal getaway?
My wife and I love the outdoors so beaches, mountains or anywhere to enjoy natural things is an ideal getaway.
What’s a small daily habit that makes a big difference for you?
A part of my daily routine is to take a short walk, no more than thirty minutes, through the woods around our home. It helps me to relax and be ready for the day ahead.
What’s a book every board member should read?
"Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley, published in 1932.
What's the best piece of advice you've ever received?
The best piece of professional advice that I've received is that everyone should enjoy what they do at work and if you don't, it's time to find something else.
In your experience, what differentiates great board chairs?
Great board chairs have a natural way to get each member engaged without putting them on the spot. They lead to consensus decisions; however, don't shy away from the occasional need for a directive decision.
If you had an extra free hour every day, how would you spend it?
I would probably spend an extra free hour reading fiction or just relaxing on the back porch.
What’s the most unforgettable trip or experience you’ve ever had?
My wife and I have been blessed to see many parts of the world and one of our most memorable experiences was at the Galapagos Islands. The natural beauty of the landscape and unbelievable wildlife is amazing.
