Richard Girgenti

Director

Richard H. Girgenti is an attorney, risk consultant, and board director. He is the founder and CEO of IDPL Consulting LLC, which provides advisory and executive coaching services for senior leaders and board directors in their efforts to manage risk and improve performance and business results with integrity. He is also senior counsel to Compliance Systems Legal Group, a boutique law firm that focuses exclusively on corporate compliance, ethics, and governance. Girgenti currently serves on the board of Consilient and several not-for-profits, including the NACD New York Chapter and the John Jay College Foundation, and is the former vice chair of the board of K2 Integrity.

Girgenti retired as a partner from KPMG LLP where he served as a board member and chaired the professional practice, ethics, and compliance and nomination committees and the firm’s governance task force. He also led the United States’ and America’s forensic advisory practice where he provided investigative, compliance, risk, and crisis management services to global and domestic clients. While at KPMG, Girgenti served as a special advisor to KPMG’s chair, leading the firm’s efforts to recruit independent directors and assisting with a cultural assessment of the firm.

Girgenti is a recognized thought leader in compliance and served as the executive sponsor for KPMG’s chief compliance officer exchange for 80 of the Fortune 350’s chief compliance officers. He is a frequent author and lecturer who has coauthored two books: The New Era of Regulatory Enforcement: A Comprehensive Guide for Raising the Bar to Manage Risk (McGraw Hill, April 2016) and Managing the Risk of Fraud and Misconduct: Meeting the Challenges of a Global, Regulated and Digital Environment (McGraw Hill, March 2011).

Prior to joining KPMG, Girgenti held a number of high-level legal and law enforcement positions. Under the late Gov. Mario M. Cuomo, he served as New York State director of criminal justice and commissioner of the division of criminal justice services, where he oversaw and coordinated the policies and initiatives of all of the state’s criminal justice agencies. He is also a former senior prosecutor and executive in the office of the Manhattan district attorney under Robert M. Morgenthau, where he handled investigations, trials, and appeals in both the state and federal courts.

Girgenti received his bachelor of arts from Seton Hall University and his juris doctor from Georgetown Law.
