Building a High-Performing Board
In Boardroom Education
Make Culture Your Board’s Performance Advantage
Most boards invest in governance structures but overlook their own culture. This in-boardroom education program gives the full board practical frameworks to assess, define, and strengthen boardroom culture, turning it from an invisible force into a deliberate lever for performance.
The program is grounded in the ten principles of NACD's Blue Ribbon Commission report, Culture as the Foundation: Building a High-Performance Board. It guides boards through defining their optimal culture, reinforcing behavioral norms, and addressing cultural fault lines. Boards that complete the program receive a certificate of completion in the organization's name that can be referenced in proxy statements.
Learning Objectives
- Define and assess your board's existing culture honestly
- Clarify the board-management authority boundary
- Deploy board leaders as active culture carriers
- Conduct rigorous individual director evaluations
- Destigmatize director off-boarding and transitions
- Establish written behavioral norms directors commit to
- Identify red flags and cultural fault lines early
- Design inclusive onboarding for new directors
- Address problematic directors with confidence
- Balance consensus-seeking with productive dissent
Designed For
- Full boards of directors of public, private, and PE-backed companies. The program is delivered to the board as a governing body, and the certificate of completion is awarded to the board collectively.
- Board chairs, nominating and governance committee chairs, audit committee chairs, general counsel, corporate secretaries, and directors participate together, so the whole board builds a shared understanding of its culture.
