Susan Dio

Susan Dio retired from BP following a career of more than 35 years in international refining, petrochemicals, and oil and gas. She is a veteran leader and board member with broad experience at BP, in the industry, and at multiple global locations.
Dio retired on July 1, 2020, as chair and president of BP America. Appointed May 1, 2018, she provided leadership and oversight to all BP businesses (14,000 employees) in the United States. She was BP PLC’s chief representative in the United States, working with policymakers, partnerships, trade associations, and environmental nongovernmental organizations. Her agenda included corporate reputation, trade, and energy policy as well as navigating the energy transition toward a low-carbon future. Passionate about mentoring, she was known for building teams and talent. As chair of the BP America board, she focused on setting strategic direction and oversight of material risk across the 350 US subsidiaries.
Between 2015 and 2018, Dio was CEO of BP Shipping, which manages the fleet of BP-operated and chartered vessels moving over 200 million tons of products across the globe each year. In that London-based role, she reset the organization’s strategy and operations while also modernizing the company’s fleet, delivering 26 new, highly efficient tankers.
While CEO, Dio served as an independent director with Britannia Steam Ship Insurance Associations Ltd., a mutual insurance association with $1.5 billion in assets across 30 countries, and was a director and vice chair of the Oil Companies International Marine Forum. She also was a member of the supervisory board of the UK Chamber of Shipping, a director and advisory committee member on the International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation Ltd., and a member’s representative with the Alaska Tanker Co.
Before her shipping assignment, Dio was based in Houston as BP’s head of audit for refining and marketing, tasked with integrating its safety and operational risk audit organization and streamlining oversight and risk management across the company. Earlier still, she ran BP’s Bulwer Island refinery in Brisbane, Australia, improving safety, reliability, and competitive performance. She also led the restructuring of the BP chemicals business at BP’s Texas City site outside of Houston after spending several years managing commercial business at the company’s former refinery there. Dio additionally served in other various petrochemicals, engineering, and commercial roles in Texas, Alabama, and London. She joined BP in 1984.
A certified chemical engineer, Dio earned her bachelor’s degree with honors in chemical engineering from the University of Mississippi; she has subsequently served on engineering advisory councils at Texas A&M University. A champion for women in the energy industry, she received the Manufacturing Institute’s Women in Manufacturing STEP (Science, Technology, Engineering and Production) Ahead Award in 2014 and was recognized as one of the Top 25 Influential Women in Energy in 2019.
Dio currently serves as an independent director for Irving Oil and Kirby Corp. She is also a member of the advisory board for Avina Clean Hydrogen and the board of trustees for the Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital. Previously, Dio held board positions with the Greater Houston Partnership, American Heart Association, Ford’s Theatre, United Way, Rotary Club, and the Boy Scouts of America’s Bay Area Council. She enjoys outdoor sports, travel, and photography. She and Larry, her husband of 41 years, have two grown sons and three grandchildren.
