Marcia Avedon is an experienced board director and former C-suite executive whose career has spanned global companies in the industrial, health care, consumer products, and professional services sectors. She is a recognized expert in leadership development, executive compensation, succession planning, talent management, corporate communications and culture, and brand and reputation enhancement. She has led large-scale transformations, including numerous mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and spin-offs.

Avedon most recently served as the executive vice president and chief human resources, marketing, and communications officer for Trane Technologies, formerly Ingersoll Rand plc. At Ingersoll Rand, a global diversified industrial and technology company with over $16 billion in revenue, she was on the executive team with company-wide responsibilities for human resources, public affairs, government relations, community relations/philanthropy, corporate communications, strategic marketing, and brand management. She served as an officer of the company, reporting to the chair and CEO, and was the senior leader supporting the compensation committee of the board of directors and supported the governance and nominating committee.

Avedon currently serves on the board of directors for Generac Power Systems where she is the compensation committee chair and a member of the governance and nominating committee. She is also a director for Acuity Brands and serves on the compensation and talent and governance and nominating committees. She was previously on the boards of GCP Applied Technologies (where she was the chair of the compensation committee), Lincoln Financial, and the Center for Creative Leadership.

Avedon founded a boutique advisory firm, Avedon Advisory LLC, to provide consulting and coaching services to leaders and organizations in the areas of leadership development, organization transformation, human capital management, and executive coaching, enhancing individual and organizational success.

Prior to Ingersoll Rand, Avedon was the senior vice president and chief human resources officer at Merck & Co. and held human resources and communications leadership positions at Honeywell and Anheuser-Busch. She began her career at Booz Allen Hamilton as a management consultant serving both private sector and public sector clients.

Avedon has been highly active in community, nonprofit, and professional arenas. She was on the board of directors of the United Way of Central Carolinas. She served on the advisory boards for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Belk School of Business (past chair), and Cornell University Center for Advanced Human Resources Studies. She was a leader on the board of the HR Policy Association (vice chair) and the Center on Executive Compensation (chair). She was a founding member and chair of the Center for Executive Succession at the University of South Carolina where she serves as executive director. Previously, she was a board member, president, and compensation committee chair for the Jersey Battered Women’s Service. She is active in Women Corporate Directors and the National Association of Corporate Directors.

Avedon holds a master of philosophy and a PhD in industrial/organizational psychology from George Washington University and a bachelor of arts from the University of North Carolina Wilmington. She has received numerous awards and recognition including being named as a fellow in the National Academy of Human Resources, the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and named one of the “Most Powerful Women in HR” by HR Executive journal. She was recognized as one of the “Top 100 Candidates to Serve on Board Compensation Committees” by Agenda journal and received the “Women Worth Watching” award by Diversity journal. She has been a frequent visiting professor and speaker at universities and professional meetings.
